Notice concerning a partial product recall in Japan of Cabin Ultra Mild Box

Tokyo, October 31, 2011--- Following confirmation that a strong flavour is detected in Cabin Ultra Mild Box products bearing prior announcement for design improvement produced and sold in Japan by Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) (TSE: 2914), the company announced it will undertake a recall of the product.

The applicable product is Cabin Ultra Mild Box bearing prior announcement for design improvement. The product's 10-pack parcel bears an expiry date of H24.6N or H24.6.

Cabin Ultra Mild Box

In connection with the design improvement in November 2011, the company has begun shipping this product since October 19, 2011. As a result of a number of consumer inquiries regarding its flavour after shipments, the company undertook an investigation and confirmed there is a strong flavour among those used for the product.

Specifications such as flavours and blends of leaf tobacco are changed on a regular basis in order to maintain quality including flavours, as ready made cigarettes use leaf tobacco, an agricultural product.

The incident took place in connection with this change, which Cabin Ultra Mild Box shipped from October 19, 2011 has gone through. From the viewpoint of maintaining quality, JT will commence a recall of the applicable Cabin Ultra Mild Box products.

We would like to request consumers who have the applicable products to either call or mail the products to the following contacts.

We sincerely apologise for the concerns and troubles caused to our consumers and retailers. The product is scheduled to be sold again in late November with a new design. We very much appreciate your understanding as we will continue to enhance our efforts concerning the quality control of our products.
