JT's Annual Survey Finds 26.3 Percent of Japanese Adults Are Smokers


Tokyo, November 22, 2006 --- Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) (TSE: 2914) today announced the results of its Japan Smoking Rate Survey, a study that has been carried-out annually since 1965. The survey, conducted in August 2006, showed that 26.3 percent of Japanese adults are smokers. Other results are summarized below. The survey method, along with the sample number, was modified this year, resulting in a lack of comparability with previous results.

Reference: The survey of last year, with different survey method, showed that the smoking rate of men was 45.8 percent, the smoking rate of women was 13.8 percent and total adult smoking rate was 29.2 percent.

Note: Figures were prepared on the basis of an adult population of 50.02 million men and 53.76 million women, using figures from the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications as of April 1, 2006.
Reference: The survey of last year, with a different survey method, showed that estimated smoking population was 22.81 million for men, 7.39 million for women, and the estimated total smoking population was 30.20 million.
