JT's Scientific Assessment Results:
The Effects of T-Vapor products on Indoor Air Quality

Japan Tobacco Inc.(JT)(TSE:2914) conducted a study to observe the effects of T-Vapor products on indoor air quality in the designated smoking room and the non-smoking area of a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan.

  • No significant increases were observed on the concentration of suspended particulate matter, nicotine or other constituents monitored in the non-smoking area of the restaurant.
  • The T-Vapor products in the designated smoking room with door and common ventilation facilities had no effects on the indoor air quality in the non-smoking area.

JT perceives that the effects on indoor air quality by T-Vapor products without combustion should be considered separately to combustible cigarettes, as the products have different properties.
The purpose of the research is to gain scientific knowledge regarding the effect of using T-Vapor products on indoor air quality.

1. Study overview (see attachment)
•   Study date: September 2018
•   Place: A typical restaurant in Tokyo
•   Study detail:Measured concentrations of the constituents listed below in the designated smoking room and the non-smoking area, when using T-Vapor products (two types) and combustible cigarettes, respectively.
•   The supervisor: Professor Emeritus Keiichi Arashidani, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan
•   Constituents measured: The following 15 items

Items defined in the Japan act on Maintenance of Sanitation in Bldgs Suspended particulate matter, Carbon monoxide, Formaldehyde
Indicator for indoor air quality TVOC(Total volatile organic compounds)
VOC(Volatile organic compounds) 1,3-Butadiene, Isoprene, Benzene, Toluene
Carbonyls Acetaldehyde, Acrolein, Crotonaldehyde
Marker compounds of environmental tobacco smoke 3-Ethenylpyridine, Nicotine
Major ingredients of T-Vapor products Propylene glycol, Glycerin

The study results show that T-vapor products in the designated smoking rooms do not affect indoor air quality in the non-smoking areas under these study conditions. We believe that designated smoking rooms for T-Vapor products with door and common ventilation facility have no effects on indoor air quality in non-smoking area.

JT continues to engage in the research and development of T-Vapor products, meeting consumers' and society's needs.
