Privacy Statement for GDPR

Japan Tobacco Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "JT", "we", "our" or "us") may collect and process personal data. This Privacy Statement applies to the processing of personal data concerning the data subject (hereinafter referred to as "you" or "your") in the European Economic Area in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

1. Acquisition of personal data

JT may request you to provide personal data to the extent necessary for the purposes set forth in the "2. Use of personal data". Provision of your personal data is necessary for such purposes. Please note that you may withdraw your consent to the processing of your personal data at any time. However, this will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you withdrew your consent.

2. Use of personal data

JT may use your personal data based on your consent. Except in the case where we individually give notice to you, JT acquires and processes personal data for the following purposes:

(1) For customers, users or business contacts

  • Exercise of rights and fulfillment of obligations based on contractual relationships and relationships with obligations, and the provision, collection and examination of information related thereto

  • Research and development in the medical and pharmaceutical field
  • Support for contributing to developments in areas such as the medical, welfare and health
  • Provision, collection and examination of medical information and academic information
  • Provision of disease awareness information
  • Requests for and implementation of clinical trials, post-marketing surveillance, etc.
  • Notification and reporting to governmental agencies, and other response to government requests
  • Miscellaneous business related to the above

3. Disclosure of personal data to third parties

Your personal data will be made available to JT and its group companies (hereinafter referred to as the "JT Group"), JT Group's consignees and to other third parties for the purposes set forth in "2. Use of personal data".

(2) Patients and participants involved in clinical trials and monitoring of pharmacovigilance information

  • Trial subject's identification code
  • Date of birth
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Physical examination data, such as height and weight, date and time
  • Race
  • Country
  • Initials
  • Background information regarding trial subjects, such as disease complications
  • Symptoms including side effects
  • Medical examination data, date and time
  • Laboratory test data, date and time
  • Medication information

5. Period for which the personal data will be stored

JT will retain your personal data for as long as your personal data is needed for the purposes set forth in "2. Use of personal data".

6. International transfers of personal data

JT may transfer your personal data to the other JT Group, across borders, and from your country or jurisdiction to other countries or jurisdictions around the world. Please note that your personal data will be transferred to Japan and that Japan does not have the same data protection laws as the EU and will not afford many of the rights conferred upon data subjects in the EU.

7. Access, portability and correction, etc. of personal data

You may request to access to, correct to, delete of, restrict of processing of, your personal data, and may request the data portability. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority regarding our processing of your personal data.
