Our initiatives

Improving community resilience

In the field of disaster response, in addition to support activities in disaster-affected areas, we also work year-round on disaster risk reduction activities, thereby contributing to the creation of disaster-resilient communities.

In 2025, we supported 71 programs related to improving community resilience.

In regions prone to disaster, the strength and sustainability of communities doesn’t rely solely on their ability to respond to disasters in the short term - it also depends on their resilience. Community resilience means being able to adapt positively after a disaster, bouncing back so that they can continue to develop and grow stronger over the long term.

In our tobacco business, we help communities achieve this largely through the work of the JTI Foundation and markets-driven programs. We engage closely with partners and charities that respond to disasters, helping to revitalize communities so they can be more resilient in the future.

Partnership with Peace Winds Japan

Peace Winds Japan (Peace Winds), a specified non-profit organization, is a Japan-originated NGO (non-governmental private organization) that conducts support activities both in Japan and overseas for lives endangered by disasters, conflicts, and changes in social structures.

As part of its initiatives in the field of disaster response, JT has had a partnership agreement with Peace Winds since 2016. In 2025, upon the expiration of the three-year agreement signed in 2022, we signed a renewed agreement with Peace Winds.

Under this agreement, in order to enable more rapid and smooth deployment of support to disaster-affected areas, we will further strengthen our support system, including the development of personnel capable of conducting overseas operations, the procurement of equipment and materials, and other necessary measures to build a system that enables immediate response overseas, in addition to reinforcing the support framework we have built during normal times, so as to respond to large-scale disasters that frequently occur around the world.

Specifically, we support the following initiatives by Peace Winds.

  • Team development through wide-ranging and continuous search and rescue (SAR) training and personnel deployment, based on International Search and Rescue Advisory Group standards
  • Building a robust cooperative framework with overseas SAR organizations through joint training and other activities, with a view to receiving and dispatching support during large-scale disasters both in Japan and overseas
  • Strengthening Peace Winds’ logistics capabilities and procuring equipment and materials necessary for life-saving activities
  • Strengthening relationships with stakeholders in Japan and overseas, including the conclusion of support agreements with local governments and hospitals expected to be affected by large-scale disasters, as well as building cooperative frameworks with support organizations and medical personnel
  • Development of logistics systems and practical training aimed at realizing a multi-institutional field hospital
  • Preparation for responding to emergencies in Japan and overseas, including East Asia
